“50 Years of April, 25 years of the Order of Economists”, was the theme of the dinner-debate held at Casa do Alentejo, last April 10th, as a reflection on the economic challenges arising from the Portuguese Revolution at the 25th of April 1974, in the sense in which this event shaped the national economic panorama.
Promoted by the Order of Economists, the meeting was chaired by the President of the Order of Economists, Professor António Mendonça and moderated by Professor António Rebelo de Sousa, with speakers being Colonel Sousa e Castro, Captain of April and Spokesperson of the Council of the Revolution, Professor Américo Ramos dos Santos, Full Professor, Retired, from the University of Lisbon (ISEG), Secretary of State for Human Resources Planning of the IV and V Provisional Governments (1975) and CESO’s Chairman of the Board, Engineer João Cravinho, Dr. José de Almeida Serra, Minister of the Sea of the IX Constitutional Government (1985) and Director General of Fisheries of the European Commission (1990-97), Dr. Mário Valadas, President of the Installation Committee of the Institute for State Participations ( 1975/76) and Guest Professor at ISEG (1967/84), Dr. Vasco Cal, President of the Higher Institute for Economics (ISE) Student Association (1973/75) and Senior Advisor to the European Commission, retired (1988/2023).
The testimonies shared during the session provided the knowledge of facts and perspectives that are little publicized and debated, as well as an in-depth reflection on the way in which this notable event contributed to mark and transform the Portuguese economic and social panorama.
