CESO is currently developing the “Support for the elaboration and implementation of Guinea Bissau mining policy and to strengthen the capacity of institutions operating in the mining sector” Project in Guinea-Bissau.
Funded by the World Bank and integrated in the "Technical Assistance Project in the Extractive Industries Sectors (PATSIE)", it aims to improve their governance and institutional performance and assure that future investments will be made in a sustainable manner, both from the environmental and social perspectives.
To improve the institutional performance of the extractive industries sector, among the activities planned, stands out a benchmarking study concerning the institutional structure and the organization of the mining sector in several countries where mining is carried out.
It is also foreseen the formulation of recommendations for the revision of the institutional and organizational framework and, also, a strategic guidance to the sector.
Through a participatory approach, the analyzes and recommendations will take into account the contributions of local and national government organizations, private sector organizations, local civil society and communities that have an important role for the mining sector.
The project will assist Guinea-Bissau on the reinforcement of the capacities of its staff through the implementation of training sessions concerning, among others, regulatory, fiscal, macroeconomic and institutional aspects.
The mining sector is one of the key strategic areas of country’s economy; it is expected that it may play an important role in the economic and social development of Guinea Bissau, whether by the use of its mineral resources as raw materials for manufacturing, or by the contribution it can provide in the reduction and substitution of imports.
The organization of this sector is therefore a critical challenge to face in the coming years, especially regarding the launch of prospecting and mining research. It may also contribute to the diversification of production, to provide and create business opportunities and to attract private investment in the sector.
For this Project, as leader of the Consortium, CESO established a partnership with MERG Materials Efficiency Research Group and with Expertise SARL.
